Salomon Peak
The SwarmSalomon Peak is a Major aboard the USS Independence who serves as Samantha Crowe’s first personal guide to the aircraft carrier and its command systems. After weeks of speaking with her only by telephone, he receives her in person, escorts her through the ship, and explains the Combat Information Center’s role. In these scenes, Peak connects Crowe’s civilian expertise with the vessel’s military infrastructure: his manner is formal, but his arrangements make room for her work aboard the ship.
Identity and Arrival
Crowe is delivered into Peak’s care by a white-shirted member of the ship’s personnel. He is described as a tall Black man in uniform, and introduces himself as Major Salomon Peak as they shake hands. Their earlier contact has been limited to telephone conversations over the preceding weeks, so this is their first face-to-face meeting. Peak seems formal and somewhat inexperienced in dealing with civilians, a reserve that shapes the initial impression without preventing him from taking responsibility for her arrival.
He leads Crowe from the exposed deck into the ship’s superstructure, which sailors call the island. They pass through another door into the interior, where the clean air marks a transition from the noisy arrival outside to the enclosed world of the carrier. The inside strikes Crowe as cave-like and cramped. Peak guides her along a winding corridor and down steep companionways, deep into the ship; the soldiers carrying her bags follow, and a bulkhead marked O2 LEVEL fixes their progress within its stacked interior.
Making Room for a Civilian Guest
Peak takes Crowe to a cabin among many identical doors lining the passageway. Its generous size and comfortable decoration surprise her: she has read that helicopter-carriers minimize living space and house troops in dormitories. When she remarks on the contrast, Peak responds that the Navy would hardly make her sleep with the marines and identifies the room as flag accommodation. His slight smile softens an otherwise formal exchange. The cabin is more than a convenience: it establishes that Crowe is being received as a guest with a place aboard, rather than folded into the ordinary quarters of the troops.
Explaining the Ship’s Information Network
Peak later identifies the Combat Information Center, or CIC, as the vessel’s nerve centre. He describes it as the point through which information entering or leaving the ship passes, including data from sensors, satellites, missile detection, surface-search radar, damage control, and communications, all updated in real time. The workstations are empty during Crowe’s visit, but Peak anticipates that she will spend substantial time there. The empty desks therefore suggest an operational role still to come, while his explanation gives her an initial map of the system she is expected to use.
He also points out the ship’s underwater surveillance capabilities, naming antisubmarine surveillance, SOSUS sonar, and SURTASS LFA. He presents them as the vessel’s underwater eyes and ears and says that nothing approaches the USS Independence without the ship knowing about it. A large display at the head of the room brings information together in an integrated overview; a smaller version appears on the bridge. Peak’s account moves from individual sensors to the shared picture they create, emphasizing that the ship’s awareness depends on information being gathered and circulated across its command spaces.
Narrative Role
Peak’s scenes establish the USS Independence as both a physical maze and an information system. The descent through narrow corridors and steep companionways places Crowe inside the vessel; the briefing then shows how that enclosed space extends outward through sensors, satellites, and sonar. Peak’s formality keeps the military-civilian distinction visible, while the cabin and the anticipated CIC work give Crowe a defined place within it. His importance in these episodes lies in that act of orientation: he makes the carrier’s facilities and procedures legible to the civilian scientist who is to work there.
